As my last week here at Durango Montessori draws to a close, I am realizing that I am extremely happy that I chose to intern here. It was great experience and I am going to miss seeing the kids everyday and getting to be with them. After doing this internship, I still don't know if I would want to go into education as a career, but I do know that I would like to do something that has to do with kids. |

For my internship, I am interning at the local elementary school Durango Montessori School located in the Smiley Building in downtown Durango. There they teach children ages six through eleven (1st-5th grade) in a hands on and interactive environment using Montessori philosophy and principles. I am going to be working in the lower elementary classroom with the 1st-3rd grades students with my mentor, Erin Williamson. Erin is one of the main teachers at DMS and she is currently in the process of getting her Montessori license.
Outside of school, I am a coach for the local cycling organization Durango Devo where their mission is to create life-long cyclists starting at a very young age. I mainly coach the younger groups of kids (push-bike, preschool, and kindergarten) which is why I chose to intern in the lower elementary classroom at DMS. During my internship, I hope to gain more skills in teaching so that I can bring these skills to my coaching with Devo. During the time that I will be interning at DMS, the students will be starting their science fair projects for their science fair in May. As part of my part of my project, I would like to help out with getting the students prepared for science fair and making sure that they understand all of the steps and procedures of the scientific process. As a former student of Durango Montessori, I am excited to help out and to give back to a school that has shaped my life and teaches using principles that I feel strongly about. Before landing this internship with Durango Montessori, I thought that I wanted to do my internship with an organization in the cycling industry. I reached out to multiple different organizations that would allow me to work with bikes or other organizations, yet I had no success. That's when I realized that I was interested in interning at a school because I am a coach and I like working with young children. I then reached out to DMS and secured my internship in the lower elementary classroom. Overall, I am very excited about my internship and I am looking forward to giving back to my old school. |
